Know Your Rights: Towards Legal Empowerment of Women

The main purpose behind publishing the book “Know your Rights” was primarily to make the laws simpler and bring clarity in understanding of such laws to the women living in both urban and rural setup. Complexities of laws have always perplexed an ordinary woman and many times due to this, in a way these laws remained ineffective and inaccessible to them.

Conference on Legal Awareness Amongst Women
Susieben Shah organized a conference on “Legal Awareness Amongst women”. The conference was held at the historic Mathurdas Visssanji Hall at Gowalia Tank near August Kranti Maidan and was inaugurated by Smt. Renukaji Choudhary, then H’ble Minister Women & Child Welfare, Government of India. The conference was supported by the National Commission for Women. Over 1,500 Mahilas from in and around Mumbai attended the conference and listened to eminent speakers like Smt. Rita Bahuguna Joshiji, Smt. Rajnitai Patil, Smt. Thesta Setalvad, Smt. Sharada Sathe, amongst others. On the occasion, a book on “Legal Awareness amongst Women – Series 1”, penned by Susieben Shah was also released by Smt. Renukaji Choudhary. The book is published in 4 languages – Hindi, English, Marathi and Urdu and is distributed free of charge at Stree Shakti Kendra.
Paper on Aspects of Urban Poverty In Mumbai
Susieben Shah penned a paper on “Aspects of Urban Poverty in Mumbai” highlighting the problems in the slums of Mumbai, with special focus on the plight of Women & Children residing in the said slums. Based on wide field study and hands experience the paper suggests effective solutions in terms of productive public action by the Governments, Organized groups & communities to better the life of urban poor.
Legal Awareness
This article provides a clear rationale for creating a separate law on Domestic Violence against women. It entails the reasons and the dire need for the implementation of this Act which can help strenghten the position of women in a society and help them deal with the domestic injustice that they have been suffering through. The article defines various aspects of the law and the benefits that the women can gain out of it. It includes all kinds of violence and provides legal and psychological protection against them. The article gives information on who the women can approach to lodge their complaint and makes the women aware of the various options of relief they can benefit out of the law. It also describes the Duties of the government to implement this law.

माझा भर नागरी गरिबांच्या समूहांना सबळ करण्याचा आहे . आर्थिकदृष्ट्या दुर्बल घटकातील बेरोजगारी दूर करून तेथील बेरोजगारांना स्वतःचा सर्वांगीण विकास साधण्याची संधी या योजनेद्वारे मिळणार आहे . शहरी बेरोजगार व्यक्तींचे जीवनमान उंचावणे व त्यांना स्वयं रोजगार मिळण्यासाठी आर्थिक साह्य तसेच अनुदान मिळवून देऊन व्यावसायिक प्रशिक्षण देणे व त्यांना स्वतःच्या पायावर उभे राहण्यास मदत करणे हे एकमेव माझे धेय्य आहे .
